Vumilia and Zembea were sisters.
One day, in March, they went to the farm to sow corn.
Zembea sowed on two ridges, got tired and sat down.
Vumilia struggled and continued to sow her maize.
She sowed seeds on five rows each containing twenty ridges, that is to say, she sowed corn on one hundred ridges.
She finished and came back to her elder sister Zembea who was sitting at the same place where she had left her before. She was cracking palm kernels.
She said to her sister, “My elder sister Zembea, shall we go back home?
Her older sister replied, “As long as it does not sprout, I will not budge.” …
Vumilia na Zembea walikua ni ndugu wawili.
Siku moja mwezi wa Machi, walienda shambani kupanda mahindi.
Zembea alipanda matuta mawili, akachoka na akaketi chini.
Vumilia alijitahidi na kuendelea kupanda mahindi yake.
Alipanda mbegu kwenye safu tano yenye matuta ishirini, yaani, alipanda mahindi kwenye matuta mia moja.
Alimaliza na akamwendea dadake mkubwa, Zembea ambaye alikua bado ameketi pale alipomuacha hapo awali. Alikua akivunja punje za mitende.
Akamwambia dadake, “Mkubwa wangu Zembea tunaeza kurudi nyumbani?”
Dada yake mkubwa akamjibu, “Ilimradi hazichipuki, sitasonga.”
